When the series finished, it was of course “strange” saying goodbye to “the one constant” in her career – Rundle has played Ada practically since she left drama school 10 years ago. Of course, globally, Rundle is best known as a woman in a man’s world – thanks to Netflix streaming Peaky Blinders, she is recognisable far and wide as stubborn Ada Thorne, the youngest and only female member of the gangster Shelby siblings (she’s been approached by fans, she says, while holidaying in Thailand). “It’s very rare that in a drama you get to see women being funny.” Sophie Rundle as Ada in Peaky Blinders (Photo: Robert Viglasky/BBC) “I don’t think you often see women being funny with each other outside of a comedy sphere,” says Rundle. Does that concern you?” she teases Laura ahead of a vetting review.) Joker Alba is forever tormenting her boss with the sort of unsuitable desk banter that you have when your colleagues are also your friends (“More than 12 sexual partners and they mark you as a security risk. Laura’s partner in crime is her deputy Alba Ortiz (Serena Manteghi) – the free-spirited zing to Laura’s uber-controlled yang. It’s still rare to see two women leading a thriller, but that’s the setup here. It’s like, ‘Yeah, too f***ing right she is’.” It’s really satisfying to see that in a protagonist – that she’s not an anomaly as a woman in this high-up position. “One of the things I really liked about Laura is her competence,” says Rundle. The show’s central mystery revolves around the death of a young man, but there are plenty of flashes of brightness from Ben Richards’s jaunty script and the abundant shots of sun-drenched Spanish streets.Īnd much in the way that it’s a joy to watch Rundle’s former co-star Sarah Lancashire humiliate terrible men in Happy Valley, it’s immensely satisfying to witness Laura striding around in a red sundress, coolly and calmly fixing the lives of every troubled tourist who crosses her path – all the while being pleasingly insolent to her meddlesome boss Sam (Steven Cree). ![]() In The Diplomat, which begins tonight, she plays Laura Simmonds, a British consul in Barcelona who is forced to become a de facto cop, counsellor and lawyer as she helps holidaymakers out of a variety of scrapes. I’ve wiped enough of my son’s bumholes to think: ‘I’m not intimidated by an older man in a position of power, because I’m a mum to this little boy who is going to be a man.’” She breaks off, cackling. “I do also think that being a mum to a boy, I’m much less intimidated by men. “That changes you.” How so? “You’re just too tired to people-please.”Ī mischievous look steals across her face. Motherhood also plays a part – she has a two-year-old son with her actor husband Matt Stokoe, whom she met on the set of Sky period drama Jamestown and now lives with in the Cotswolds. ![]() “I’m much more comfortable saying what I think.” Even so, she is more assertive when it comes to shaping her roles now. I think that’s the normal female experience,” she says. Sometimes, that’s natural because you’ve got a lot to learn, and sometimes, you are patronised, too. “Any woman in this room would be able to list countless times when you’re not listened to. “You spend time in this industry and you get a bit tougher.” That’s partly because “the kinds of roles we’re offering to women are changing”, says the 34-year-old, but it also reflects a shift in herself. But with her Peakys character Ada stepping out of her brothers’ shadows in the final series of the gangster drama last year, along with her latest role as a sleek British consul in Alibi thriller The Diplomat, her recent parts have a lot more mettle.
